Using Your Fan and Air Conditioner in Chadron04/13/2016The weather is finally warming up and soon you may have to turn over to your air conditioner. Along with scheduling your annual air conditioner service with the experts at MPC Heating & Cooling, there are some other tasks you can do to stay comfy and save money this season. During the transition season in Chadron, those far too few spring temps, you may use ceiling fans to keep cozy. Did you know that using your ceiling fan along with your air conditioner may not only keep you more comfy during the warmer days, but also save you money? In order to do that you have to ensure you’re taking advantage of ceiling fans and your air conditioning correctly. Here’s a couple things to remember: Raise Your Thermostat This is where the cost savings can potentially come in. If you aren’t raising your thermostat you won’t be saving any money. Raising your thermostat by a few degrees, in addition to using your ceiling fan, shouldn’t change your comfort level too much. For every degree you raise your temperature, you’re lowering the period of the “on” cycle of your air conditioner. Adjust Air Direction Ceiling fans have a clockwise and counterclockwise setting to change according to the season. During the warmer months you’ll want to make sure the air is blowing down. You can stand underneath the fan to see if you feel a breeze. If you don’t, adjust the direction. Ceiling fans do not actually cool your air, but they make you feel cooler. It’s the wind chill effect. You’ll feel cooler than the temperature shown on the thermostat. Turn Off Fan When You’re Not There Treat your ceiling fan like you do lights, turn it off when leaving a room. If no one is in the room to take in the wind chill that a fan offers you’re wasting energy by running your fan. Keep in mind, a fan doesn’t actually cool your air, it just moves your air.
