Five Reasons Why Your Air Conditioner Isn't Cooling Your Home

July 10, 2020

When it’s a warm summer day in Chadron, nothing feels worse than registering your HVAC isn’t operating the way it was built to. The last thing you want to do is call for air conditioner service. But your AC is an incredibly complex system, so it can be difficult to figure out what’s triggering the issue all alone.

That’s why MPC Heating & Cooling wrote this handbook to help you understand what could be taking place with your home comfort system. Here, you’ll learn some common reasons your family is feeling too warm. And even though a couple of these are easy DIY activities, you may have to turn to a pro for home comfort system repair.

And if you need us, MPC Heating & Cooling is prepared to take care of your home. Here are five reasons why your air conditioner may not be cooling your home in Chadron.

1. Your Device Settings Could Be Incorrect

Every home uses their thermostat a little differently to work with their particular requirements. Yet, many people make the mistake of setting their thermostat to “On” rather than “Auto.” With this setting, the fan in your system will continue to produce an air current even when you’ve reached your set temperature.

This can look like your AC is distributing untreated air, when in reality it’s only employing the fan more frequently than required. Change this setting and determine if things are different.

2. Your Air Conditioner Needs a Routine Cleaning

There are two primary areas to inspect for dirt or dust buildup when your air conditioner doesn’t appear to be functioning well.

First off, examine your HVAC filter. If you don’t switch your filter often enough, built-up dust can make it more labor intensive for air to pass through and cool your space. If your filter is clearly dirty or dusty, it’s definitely time for a substitute. (And as a rule, you need to change it about once every three months at the very least.)

If your filter seems clean, head to your outside unit. See if there’s a couple of feet of space around the unit and clean up plants or litter around it. This element of your AC lets off the heat from inside your house. If the coils outside are congested, you won’t be feeling cool inside.

We advise booking professional air conditioner maintenance each year to keep your system working properly and to keep your warranty valid.

3. Your System is Losing Refrigerant

Refrigerant is the substance that cools the air in your home. It goes between your indoor and outdoor system pieces to absorb and release heat, to help your rooms get cool. If there is a crack somewhere, you won’t be comfortable again until you book professional air conditioning repair.

Indicators of a refrigerant leak include a decrease in treated air, climbing utility expenses, frozen evaporator coils and unusual hissing noises originating from your air conditioner.

If you feel refrigerant may be leaking, call MPC Heating & Cooling for HVAC repair as soon as possible. Refrigerant can also be hazardous to your family’s health.

4. One or More Pieces Have to Be Replaced

Your AC contains a couple important elements. These include the blower, evaporator coils, compressor, fan, condenser coils and expansion valve. If one part is not working, your home comfort will suffer.

Our MPC Heating & Cooling experts are trained and knowledged in HVAC. They can help you find and mend any issue.

5. Your Air Conditioner Needs to Be Replaced

If your equipment is over 10 years old, it could likely be a good time to consider new air conditioner installation. As your system gets older, it unfortunately won’t operate as well as it has in the past. And it could be making your space feel unpleasant.

If your AC is on the younger side but still isn’t properly cooling your home, it might be the wrong size for your space. HVAC systems are made in different sizes. An air conditioner that’s undersized absolutely can’t cool a home the way a correctly sized HVAC can.
